Post-2015 Thematic Consultations on Energy

The UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy for All Initiative recently launched the Post-2015 Global Thematic Consultation on Energy, in partnership with the Governments of Mexico and Norway and the support of UN-Energy, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank.

Leading up to the year 2015, the United Nations is holding a series of consultations to help shape the post-2015 agenda. To that end The World We Want web platform (http://www.worldwewant2015.org/energy2015) was created as a joint initiative linking the United Nations and Civil Society. One of the major global thematic consultations areas is energy. The purpose of this online consultation is to stimulate discussions and facilitate global conversations on a broad post-2015 energy agenda. By gathering responses from the public at large on the global dialogue on the issue of energy, it helps to prompt a global discussion on how energy should be considered in a post-MDG development framework.

The first phase which is live now and ends on February 3rd 2013 is titled "Why energy matters, what are the challenges/opportunities, and what can we do about it?" The topics included in this phase are: Achieving universal energy access, increasing the use of renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and exploring the energy-sustainable development nexus. Phase two which is scheduled for February 4th to the 17th is titled "How can we effectively integrate energy issues into the post 2015 development framework?" and will include the following topics: The global goals, targets and indicators, as well as related processes and engagements needed to ensure effective integration of energy issues into the post-2015 discussions and subsequent implementation.

The questions provide a context that will allow to capture, summarize and present global voices in a way useful for the post-2015 discussions in the United Nations and beyond. Additional more specific questions to stimulate further avenues of dialogue are also presented within the web based forum. Face-to-face consultations will follow once the online discussions are closed and upon completion all results will be summarised into a final report with key recommendations, which will be disseminated to inform on-going processes, including the Secretary-General's Post-2015 High Level Panel as well as the SDGs discussions. The final report will propose a set of recommendations and processes on how to continue to engage with key stakeholders towards 2015 at the national, regional and global levels to help ensure the integration of energy into the post-2015 development agenda.

Online participants are encouraged to submit comments and responses on the World We Want 2015 web platform (http://www.worldwewant2015.org/energy2015) or on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#Energy2015) using the #Energy2015 hashtag. Give voice and make your opinion heard!
