The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is hosting a webinar to discuss the role of fossil fuel subsidy reform in supporting the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Participants will explore opportunities for financing the SDGs through fossil fuel subsidy reform, which is recognized as a fiscal policy tool for domestic resource mobilization (DRM) in the SDGs. The event will also discuss the Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform Communiqué, which calls for the removal of subsidies to fossil fuels. Launch of Business For 2030 Portal
The US Council for International Business (USCIB) is launching a web portal for business engagement in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The portal - 'Business for 2030' - highlights examples of business initiatives and partnerships relevant to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets. The examples focus on the critical role of infrastructure for energy, transport, health, ICT and finance, and on transforming public-private partnerships (PPPs) through national planning and coordination for achieving the SDGs. Business for 2030 is an initiative of USCIB and partner organizations aimed at helping to achieve the SDGs by stimulating a more productive partnership between the public and private sectors. UN Private Sector Forum 2015
This event, hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will focus on the role of the private sector in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are expected to be adopted during the UN Summit to adopt the post-2015 development agenda. The Forum aims to: increase the understanding of efforts underway by the private sector and civil society; showcase contributions businesses are making to sustainable development, including by setting ambitious goals and engaging in cross-sector partnerships; create a shared understanding of the private sector's role in contributing to the SDGs, focusing on how business contributions to governance issues, such as anti-corruption, peace and stability, and the rule of law, can help advance the SDG agenda; highlight the importance of long-term goal-setting by businesses aligned with the 2030 SDG time frame; and provide a platform for business, investors, governments, foundations and civil society organizations to explore pathways for enhancing the impact of business contributions to sustainable development, including through public-private partnerships. Approximately 350 participants are expected to attend the Forum, including CEOs, and high-level representatives from governments, UN agencies, funds and programmes, civil society organizations, and business associations, foundations and investor groups. UNEP Champions of the Earth Gala Event
The Champions of the Earth Award is the UN's highest environmental honor, highlighting people and organizations who have led the world's response to climate change and sustainable development through example and action. The 2015 Champions of the Earth awards aim to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by showcasing outstanding efforts toward the transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient, inclusive and sustainable economic models. Solutions Summit
On the sidelines of the three-day UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, the Solutions Summit will seek to highlight "exceptional innovators" (technologists, engineers, scientists, and others) who are developing solutions that address one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and also seek to catalyze a grassroots effort, where communities scout and convene resources around solution-makers. During the event, a group of 17-20 global innovators will be invited to give a 'lightning talk outlining their breakthrough efforts' to senior policymakers, investors, and industry leaders. The Solutions Summit is led by the UN Foundation, Project Everyone, and the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), in collaboration with the US' White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Kenyan Ministry of Information Communications and Technology, and the Estonian Information System Authority, with an open invitation for other governments and collaborators to join. High-Level Event on Implementing SDG 7 on Energy
This high-level event on ‘Implementing Sustainable Development Goal 7: The Role of partnerships in ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all' will celebrate the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 on energy and showcase commitments and actions towards the Goal by a wide range of stakeholders, including high-level representatives of governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector. Commitments are expected to focus on objectives and targets related to energy access, energy efficiency and renewable energy. The meeting, taking place on the sidelines of the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, will be co-hosted by the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) Secretariat and the Government of Denmark. The General Debate of the 70th Session of the General Assembly will take place from 28 September - 6 October 2015. It will follow the 15 September 2015 Opening of the 70th Session of the General Assembly, 25 September 2015 visit of His Holiness Pope Francis, and the 25-27 September 2015 Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. ATAG Global Sustainable Aviation Summit 2015
The 2015 Global Sustainable Aviation Summit will focus on preparing the industry for both the upcoming 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in November-December 2015 and the 39th International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly in 2016. Aviation industry representatives, suppliers, governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), regulators, and environmental groups are anticipated to attend the conference. The participants will engage in discussions on: the roles of technology, alternative fuels and market-based measures in achieving a 50% reduction in our carbon footprint by 2050; sustainable aviation; noise mitigation; environmental management; and environmental communications. The conference is being organized by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), with collaboration from the Airports Council International (ACI), Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations (ICCAIA) and International Air Transport Association (IATA). Sixth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development
Organized as part of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) 2014-2024, the Sixth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will consider how to operationalize the Hammamet Declaration (signed by the Executive Secretaries of the UN Regional Commissions in support of energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy access). The Forum will also host workshops and training courses on: Energy Efficiency in Buildings; Business Planning for Renewable Energy Investments Projects; Access to Energy in Remote Areas; Energy Portal for Asia-Pacific; and the Energy Efficiency Industry Accelerator. In addition, an expo with a focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, products and solutions will be organized. The Government of Armenia, UN Regional Commissions, UN Development Programme (UNDP), Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) and UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are co-organizing the Forum. G20 Energy Ministers Meeting
Organized by the Turkish Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20), the G20 Energy Ministers Meeting will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, on 2 October. Among other things, G20 energy ministers are expected to endorse an Energy Access Action Plan as a voluntary collaboration mechanism. Other priorities of the Turkish G20 presidency in the area of energy include: energy efficiency; the G20 Principles on Energy Collaboration; rationalizing and phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies; and the Joint Organisations Data Initiative.
