High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2016)
The Fourth High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place on 11-15 July 2016, followed by a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 18-20 July 2016. Conference on Bioenergy and Development
The Conference on Bioenergy and Development will bring together experts and practitioners to discuss ‘The investment case for sustainable production systems'. The conference will identify ways that bioenergy can provide equitable access to energy while contributing to livelihoods, income and growth without compromising food production, ecosystem services and productive land use. It will address how bioenergy can meet growing energy needs; contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and combat climate change. The conference will be organized around a technical session and high-level panel. The event is being co-organized by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IIAS) and the World Agroforestry Center. Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum
The Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) will explore renewable energy investment opportunities across the region. The event will bring together more than over 400 delegates, including government officials, utilities, regulators, multilaterals, developers, and providers of capital and technology from more than 20 Caribbean countries. A ministerial roundtable, panel sessions and plenaries will address, inter alia: renewable penetration scenarios for island utilities; grid integration; a clean transportation roadmap; accelerating private sector investment; geothermal energy; smart grids; and mapping international and regional collaboration on energy security. Panel discussions will focus on specific countries, including Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Saint Lucia. The event is being hosted by New Energy Events, with sponsorship from World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), among others. 2nd Session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency
The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will convene the 2nd session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency to discuss best practices and financial, technical and policy barriers to improving energy efficiency in the UNECE region. The agenda includes: a workshop on best policy practices for promoting energy efficiency; the report on the implementation of the Work Plan of the Group of Experts for 2014–2015; the International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development; renewal of Mandate and Draft Work Plan of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency for 2016–2017; and key messages for the Committee on Sustainable Energy. The Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency was established to carry out concrete, results-oriented activities that enhance energy efficiency, mitigate climate change, and strengthen regional cooperation in the region. 76th Session of UNECE CHLM
The UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) will hold its 76th session to review its work and discuss issues involving housing, land management and urban development, including standards for energy efficiency in housing, smart cities, and implementation of the Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management in the ECE Region for the Period 2014-2020. The session will also agree on CHLM input into HABITAT III, the global Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development. Sixth Session of the IRENA Assembly
The sixth session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly will convene from 16-17 January 2016. The event will consider, among other things, the Agency's work programme for 2016/2017 and review its medium-term strategy. 50th Meeting of the GEF Council
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, and sustainable forest management; and in the GEF's integrated approach programs on sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Council also provides guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. The GEF Council meeting will be preceded on 6 June by a consultation with civil society organizations (CSOs) at the same location. On 9 June the Council will convene as the 20th meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), also at the same location. Ninth World Urban Forum
The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.
