Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) (SDEP2)
The Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) will be hosted jointly by the Italian Government, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the European Union Commission (EC). The two day Forum will be split into day one, 16 May being a technical thematic stakeholder day deepening on Energy Access, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Energy Security, and day two, 17 May will be dedicated to high level delegates and stakeholders. The Forum will build on the First Stakeholder meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012. It envisages participation of African and European Ministers, AU and EU Commissioners, and more than 300 other high-level participants representing policy-makers, regional institutions, international organisations, the banking & finance industry, the private sector, academia, the civil society and the media. The conference is expected to result in an Africa-EU Energy Stakeholder Forum Communiqué, launch a “Mapping of Initiatives and Programmes in Africa Report”, release of an “Intermediate AEEP Status Report”, and develop a stakeholders' call-for-action. 2016 Policy Dialogue on Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific
This policy dialogue, organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), is expected to: identify driving forces shaping the energy agenda; increase understanding of the underlying issues relevant to energy security and sustainable energy use; and strengthen linkages between implementation of the Asian and Pacific Energy Forum (APEF) Plan of Action and other initiatives and frameworks, in particular the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. The dialogue will be an opportunity to build on the outcomes of the 2013 and 2014 Policy Dialogues, as well as the APEF, and to network with international development partners. It will provide guidance to the Secretariat on how the APEF Energy Data and Policy Information Portal and the Regional Trends Report can help facilitate APEF implementation, and it will recommend approaches to and strategies for organizing the First Committee on Energy in 2017. UNGA High-level Thematic Debate: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Mogens Lykketoft, will convene this high-level thematic debate on achieving the SDGs as one of three high-level events during UNGA 70. High-level Forum: The Africa We Want in 2030, 2063 and Beyond
The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the Government of Sweden and the African Union Commission (AUC) are organizing a High-level Forum on ‘Early Action and Results on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development'. The Forum will bring together high-level speakers and participants to focus on the synergies and complementarity of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will address three themes: towards transformative economic growth and regional integration in Africa, including sustainable and decent work for youth (SDGs 8 and 9); empowering African Women and gender (SDG 5); and consolidating peace and security in Africa (SDG 16). The event will take place during the week of the High-level Ceremony of the Paris Agreement and the UN General Assembly's High-level Thematic Debate on Achieving the SDGs. Jump-starting the SDGs in Germany: Natural Resources and Sustainable Consumption and Production
This conference will explore the challenges of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Germany, with a particular focus on natural resources and sustainable consumption and production. Through interactive panel discussions and parallel dialogue forums, the event will assess the role of partnerships for collaboration and mutual learning to achieve the SDGs within and outside Germany, including regarding core issues such as efficient resource use, food security and nutrition, bioenergy, land use, the rural-urban continuum, and follow-up and review. The event is co-hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS), the Stockholm Environment Institute, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), Germanwatch e.V. and the World Centre for Sustainable Development (RIO+Centre). 2016 UNEP FI Global Roundtable and Annual General Meeting
The 2016 UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Global Roundtable and Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with support from the UAE Central Bank. The events will bring together finance stakeholders from various sectors, including government, civil society and the UN, to discuss the role of the global financial sector in addressing the sustainable development and climate change agendas. Topics to be addressed during the two-day Global Roundtable, linked to select sustainable development goals (SDGs), include: climate change mitigation and decarbonizing finance (SDG 13); resilient and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11); clean energy and water (SDGs 6 and 7); and financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SDG 8). Plenary sessions are planned on: green islamic finance; policy and regulatory frameworks for a sustainable financial system; and sustainable finance innovations. Fourth Annual Conference of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform
This conference will meet under the theme ‘Transforming Development through Inclusive Green Growth' and is being convened as part of Global Green Growth Week 2016, to be held from 5-9 September 2016 in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. It will highlight research and policy considerations affecting pro-poor inclusive green growth and strengthen the Green Growth Knowledge Platform's (GGKP) objective of delivering pro-poor, socially inclusive green growth through best policy practices and strategically aligned efforts by international organizations. The conference will focus on links to policy outcomes and practical applications for delivering inclusive green growth in developing countries and emerging economies. It will bring together researchers, practitioners and policymakers in plenary and parallel sessions to: discuss the latest findings on policies and practices that stimulate inclusive green growth; identify priorities for action by stakeholders to pursue the most promising policies and practices; and build practitioner skills and define future research, knowledge sharing and collaboration opportunities. More specifically, sub-themes and session topics will address: strategy and policy, including distributional impacts from transitioning to green growth, inclusive green growth strategies, the informal economy, and tracking progress with green growth metrics and indicators; participation and empowerment, such as gender-balanced participation in green growth initiatives, skills and capacities for transitioning to green growth, green social enterprises, and information and communication technologies as catalysts for green growth; fiscal policy and finance, including fiscal reform, inclusive finance and impact investing, and insurance solutions; and sectors, including pro-poor natural resources and land use management, green cities as green growth drivers, investments for green energy access, and inclusive water management and governance. UN Global Compact Event on Innovative Partnerships Enabling Green and Gender Inclusive Growth
This side event hosted by the UN Global Compact will examine how companies are innovating and investing in inclusive business models using energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies, and turning the climate challenge into market opportunities for both women and men. The event takes place on the sidelines of the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 60). EU Sustainable Energy Week 2016
During the month of June 2016, the European Commission will be hosting the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2016, which will promote energy-saving initiatives and the generation of power from clean, secure, efficient and renewable sources. The event includes a Policy Conference, to be held from 14-16 June 2016, during which approximately 60 sessions on sustainable energy policy will take place, with stakeholders debating new policy developments, best practices and sustainable energy ideas. A second component of EUSEW is the Networking Village, where an exhibition and networking area gives attendees the opportunity to meet. In addition, a number of Energy Days organized by local public and private organizations will raise awareness about energy efficiency and renewables, such as through workshops, competitions or tours of power plants. Lastly, during the Policy Conference, an Awards Ceremony will be held to recognize outstanding innovation in energy efficiency and renewables with prizes awarded from an expert jury and European citizens. Africa Carbon Forum 2016
The Eight Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) will inform participants on the latest investment, finance and development opportunities relating to climate change. Issues for discussion include: opportunities for Africa in a post-Paris global landscape; policy options and opportunities for transformational development in the region presented by Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); innovative projects, programmes and investment opportunities for climate-resilient development, such as the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative and African Initiative on Adaptation and Loss and Damage; sources of climate finance and how to access them, including market-based approaches to sustainable development; results-based financing; and cooperative initiatives under the Nairobi Framework (NF) Partnership, which aims to improve the level of participation of developing countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The ACF is organized by the Nairobi Framework partners, including the UNFCCC, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) along with the UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Forum will bring together climate change focal points, project developers and policymakers, as well as representatives from financial institutions, CDM Designated National Authorities (DNAs), the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), multilateral agencies, the media and other stakeholders.
