This special event will take place at the invitation of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who has asked world leaders to deposit their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession to the Paris Agreement on climate change. The event will also provide an opportunity for other countries to publicly commit to joining or ratifying the Paris Agreement by the end of 2016, and will help efforts to ensure early entry into force. The Paris Agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 countries, accounting for 55% of global GHG emissions, deposit their instruments of ratification or acceptance. Fifth International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation 2016
The Fifth International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation 2016 (CCA 2016) will take place under the theme, 'Challenges and Issues in Adaptation'. The event aims to provide a platform for participants to build relationships, learn about best practices and foster research collaborations on adaptation. CCA 2016 sessions will include: adaptation services; land and water; resource efficiency; developing a bio-economy; greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring; making transitions happen; sustainable cities and people; and the built environment. COP22 Low-Emissions Solutions Conference
The COP22 'Low-Emissions Solutions Conference: Global Brainstorming on Practical Pathways to Low Emissions' will follow up on commitments made in the Paris Agreement on climate change, in which countries are responsible for submitting a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the period to 2030, as well as a Low-Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) to 2050. Convening under the theme 'Global Brainstorming on Practical Pathways to Low Emissions,' the Conference will provide an opportunity to share knowledge, exchange information, identify bottlenecks, discuss best practices and prioritize future research. The conference will: support operationalization of the Paris Agreement; strengthen the technical capacities of countries to prepare their NDCs and LEDs; develop technology pathways for decarbonized energy systems; and create a dialogue among engineers and technology specialists on innovative solutions for a low-emissions future. The agenda includes the following issues: design of NDCS and LEDS; cities and energy efficiency in buildings; transport; power generation and distribution; and public policies and regulations to support the decarbonization of energy systems. The Conference will be held on the sidelines of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC. It is the first time in the history of the COP that a large-scale technical solutions conference is being organized for countries, and the goal is that it become an annual event at future COPs. Scoping Meeting for IPCC Special Report on Impacts of Global Warming of 1.5°C Above Pre-Industrial Levels
The scoping meeting for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission pathways is expected to result in a draft scoping paper that: describes the report's objectives; included an annotated outline of the report; and layout out the process and timeline for its preparation. IPCC 44 in October will review the paper and decide on further IPCC work on the report. The report will integrate information and perspectives from all the three IPCC Working Groups. The 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP-21) to the UNFCCC, in its decision on the adoption of the Paris Agreement, invited the IPCC to provide such a report in 2018. IPCC 43 in April 2016 accepted the invitation to provide such a report in the context of strengthening the global response to climate change, sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty. In addition, the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) invited the IPCC, when elaborating the report, to include consideration of the impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, and of the contribution of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and of ecosystem restoration, to efforts to keep temperature rise below 1.5°C. Asia Pacific Carbon Forum 2016
The Asia Pacific Carbon Forum 2016 will focus on two workstreams: emissions markets and carbon pricing, and climate finance and investment. It will address such themes as: carbon markets for climate change mitigation, particularly regarding how co-benefits from climate action can build resilience; finance and climate-friendly policies delivering on sustainable development, as part of countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement; how to align existing and new carbon markets and mechanisms in the region with the Paris Agreement; NDC implementation through market and non-market based approaches; and acceleration of climate action on the ground. The Forum, which is the region's leading annual event for climate finance, carbon markets and low carbon technologies, will bring together representatives of business, finance and government and is being held as part of Global Green Growth Week 2016. Global Green Growth Week 2016
Global Green Growth Week 2016 (GGGW2016), which will meet under the theme 'Maximizing Impact for Inclusive and Sustainable Green Growth,' will provide a platform to generate innovative solutions, leverage green growth opportunities and promote the delivery of pro-poor, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable growth. The event, which is being organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), will address four thematic priorities for inclusive, sustainable green growth: energy, water, land use and green cities. The event will bring together representatives from government, multilateral development banks (MDBs), international development agencies, the private sector, academia and non-governmental organizations. Participants will look at green growth policy, research, partnerships, financing and technology through policy dialogues, panel discussions, capacity-building workshops, country-focused briefings and technology exhibits. GGGW2016 will include: the Global Green Growth Summit, which will address the challenges of developing bankable projects and innovative green finance; the 4th Annual Conference of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, which will highlight the latest research and policy considerations affecting pro-poor inclusive growth; the Asian Regional Policy Dialogue, during which ministers will discuss policy options that address the challenge of transitioning away from coal use and toward green growth powered by renewable energy; the Inclusive Green Growth Partnership, which will strengthen cooperation to increase green investment in developing countries; the launch of the GGGI-New Climate Economy (NCE) Africa Initiative and the regional launch of the 2016 NCE report, which will support African policymakers navigate the development-climate change nexus; the Green Growth Fair and Technology Exhibit; country focus sessions showcasing more than 30 GGGI projects; the 9th session of the GGGI Council and the 5th session of the GGGI Assembly; and site visits to showcase Jeju Island's renewable energy and green growth projects. CLIMATE CHANCE: A Summit Dedicated to Concrete Action
The CLIMATE CHANCE summit will address, inter alia, the link between climate and development, a new framework for the sustainable city, financing climate action, and mobilizing local actors and the younger generation. It will also discuss the topics of adaptation, territorial planning, economy and employment, territorial cooperation, forest, transport and energy. The conference is expected to encourage the sharing experiences and innovations, culminate in a global plan of action, and reiterate the importance of non-state actors in the fight against climate change. AfDB Workshop on SDG 16 and High 5s in Fragile Situations in Africa
The African Development Bank (AfDB) will host this workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities of implementing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 in fragile situations in Africa, within the context of the AfDB's "High-5" priority areas. Participants will also discuss: domestic policies, strategies and resources to support implementation of the SDGs, taking into account fragile situations; opportunities for peacemaking and statebuilding in West Africa, including through the African Union's (AU) peace and security architecture and regional peace-making initiatives; and mobilization of international support to post-conflict reconstruction. The workshop is expected to help the UN, AU and AfDB identify concrete actions to strengthen their partnership to implement SDG 16 in Africa at national and regional levels, with a special emphasis on West Africa. Sixth Special Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN)
The sixth special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) will address the theme 'Agenda 2030 and Paris Agreement: From policy to implementation in Africa'. The session opens with a two-day meeting of the expert group, followed by the ministerial segment on 18 and 19 April 2016. The objective of the meeting is to provide an opportunity for ministers and experts to deliberate on how to move forward with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as to assess the implications for Africa of the Paris agreement on Climate Change, especially in relation to the swift implementation of the African initiatives on Renewable Energy and Adaptation. Established in December 1985 following a conference of African ministers of environment held in Cairo, Egypt, AMCEN's mandate includes advocating for environmental protection in Africa and ensuring that: basic human needs are met adequately and in a sustainable manner; social and economic development is realized at all levels; and agricultural activities and practices meet the food security needs of the region. Regular sessions of AMCEN have been convened every second year since its inception. ICAO High-level Meeting on a Global Market-Based Measure Scheme for Global Aviation
This meeting will discuss draft International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly resolution text on a global market-based measure (MBM) scheme and make recommendations to the 208th session of the ICAO Council, in preparation for the 39th Session of the ICAO Assembly, which will meet from 27 September to 7 October 2016. This high-level meeting will be attended by ICAO Contracting States and other international organizations with direct involvement in aviation and/or the environment. Prior to the meeting, on 10 May, a briefing will review the basic elements of the global MBM proposal. In 2013, the 38th session of the ICAO Assembly adopted a resolution, deciding to develop a global MBM scheme for international aviation. The meeting is being organized by ICAO.
