The International Year of Sustainable Energy for All

In recognition of the importance of energy for sustainable economic development, the United Nations General Assembly has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. With leadership from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN-Energy is undertaking a new global initiative, Sustainable Energy for All. This initiative will engage governments, the private sector, and civil society partners globally to achieve three major goals by 2030:

Ensure universal access to modern energy services.
Reduce global energy intensity by 40 per cent.
Increase renewable energy use globally to 30 per cent.

United Nations Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform

The Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) provides leadership in promoting and coordinating implementation of the sustainable development agenda of the United Nations. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) which concluded on 22 June 2012, is been considered one of the largest conferences in the history of the United Nations. Governments renewed their strong political commitment to sustainable development and to promote integration and coherence of policies and the implementation of actions in the social, economic and environmental areas.

Coordinated Low Emissions Assistance Network (CLEAN)

The Coordinated Low Emissions Assistance Network (CLEAN) was established in November 2009 with an aim to improve communication and coordination of national and international organizations that are assisting developing countries with preparation and implementation of comprehensive low GHG emission development plans and strategies. This includes support for technology needs assessments, low carbon and clean energy development plans, technology roadmaps and low carbon technology deployment programs. All partners have agreed to a set of principles which can be downloaded here: CLEAN Principles. We welcome other organizations in developing and developed countries assisting with low carbon plans and programs to join this network

LEDS Global Partnership

The Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Global Partnership was founded to advance low emissions development through coordination, information exchange, and cooperation among programs and countries working to advance low emissions growth. Launched in early 2011, the Partnership currently brings together more than 27 government and international institutions.

REN21 - Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century

REN21 is the global policy network that provides a forum for international leadership on renewable energy. Its goal is to bolster policy development for the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing and industrialised economies. Open to a wide variety of dedicated stakeholders, REN21 connects governments, international institutions, non-governmental organisations, industry associations, and other partnerships and initiatives. Linking the energy, development and environment sectors, REN21 strengthens the influence of the unique renewable energy community that came together at the "renewables 2004" conference in Bonn. REN21 is the network in which ideas are shared and action is encouraged to promote renewable energy worldwide.

Clean Energy Ministerial

The international agency promoting all The Clean Energy Ministerial is a high-level global forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, to share lessons learned and best practices, and to encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy. Initiatives are based on areas of common interest among participating governments and other stakeholders. The Clean Energy Ministerial’s initiatives build on Technology Action Plans that were released by the Major Economies Forum Global Partnership in December 2009, which laid out best practice blueprints for action in key technology areas. The CEM initiatives are focused on three global climate and energy policy goals: (1) Improve energy efficiency worldwide through the Global Energy Efficiency Challenge, (2) Enhance clean energy supply, and (3) Expand clean energy access.

International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

The international agency promoting all forms or renewable energy: IRENA was officially established in Bonn in January 2009. To Date 148 states and the European Union signed the Statute of the Agency. Mandated by these governments worldwide, IRENA will promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms or renewable energy. Acting as the global voice for renewable energies, IRENA will facilitate access to all relevant renewable energy information, including technical data. Find out more about IRENA on their website.

The UNEP Sustainable Energy Finance Members is an international convening body for public and publicly funded organizations that finance, support and accelerate low carbon clean technology markets.

Power the World

Power the World is a pledge to help 1 million families gain access to sustainable energy solutions. Music group Linkin Park and their non-profit organization Music for Relief have partnered with UN Foundation and EarthSpark International to bring clean energy solutions to families without energy access beginning in Haiti through Enèji Pwòp (Clean Energy in Haitian Creole).

en.lighten Initiative

The en.lighten initiative addresses the challenge of accelerating global market transformation to environmentally sustainable lighting technologies by developing a coordinated global strategy and providing technical support for the phase-out of inefficient lighting. This will reduce global GHGs from the lighting sector and mercury released from coal combustion. The en.lighten initiative was created in 2009 as a partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), OSRAM AG and Philips Lighting with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The National Lighting Test Centre (NLTC) became a partner in 2011.

International Sustainable Energy Development Centre (ISEDC)

In accordance with Agreement between the Government of Russian Federation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) concerning the establishment and operation of the International Sustainable Energy Development Centre (in Moscow, RF) as category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO as of 05 September 2008 the principle objectives of the Centre activity are the following:

Conduct studies and information exchange to improve energy sustainable development policy efficiency and energy poverty eradication; identify challenges and threats to the energy sustainable development and elaborate recommendations to eliminate and reduce them;
Facilitate harmonization of energy strategies goals of various countries; expand cooperation with international organizations and countries to identify and harmonize long term interests and goals of energy development;
Elaborate and apply new techniques of analysis and assessment of trends and energy development scenarios building.
