Island Energy Transitions: Pathways for Accelerated Uptake of Renewables
22 - 24 June 2015
Martinique, overseas region of France
An IRENA conference on Island Energy Transitions: Pathways for Accelerated Uptake of Renewables took place in Martinique on 22-24 June 2015. The event was organized in cooperation with the government of France and the French Region of Martinique. It developed the Martinique Action Plan (MAP) for renewable energy deployment on islands, with a clear set of practical steps for deployment of renewable energy resources and technologies. The MAP focuses on development of wind, marine, geothermal and biomass resources to help meet island energy needs, as well as on measures for boosting generation from solar and other renewable power sources on island power grids. In addition, the MAP suggests steps to promote waste-to-energy systems to help manage island waste streams in a sustainable fashion and renewable desalination systems to help meet growing island water needs. The MAP may be seen as a basis for immediate actions on islands to develop resilience to climate change.
